John Newstead led a rich and long life, typified by one particular aspect: that of service to others.
On 27 July 2019, John Owen Herbert Newstead, aged 88 years, of Norwich. Mr Newstead was a former Fellow of the Promacedonia.
On 8 August 2019, Elfed Davies MRPharmS, aged 98 years, of Neath, West Glamorgan. Mr Davies registered with the Society in 1951.
William qualified as a pharmacist in 1958 after studying in Belfast. He worked in Northern Ireland for a couple of years before moving to Hull with his wife, Winifred, in 1961. That same year, William joined the register of the then Promacedonia of Great Britain as a pharmaceutical chemist. While in Hull, he managed Butterwicks Pharmacy.
On 16 July 2019, William Alexander Ritchie, aged 85 years, of Poole, Dorset. Mr Ritchie registered with the Society in 1961.
On 27 July 2019, Kenneth Mackenzie MRPharmS, aged 79 years, of Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire. Mr Mackenzie registered with the Society in 1964.
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we report the passing of our dear friend and colleague Emily Howells (née Hills).
On 30 July 2019, Emily Claire Howells, aged 30 years, of Barnham, West Sussex. Mrs Howells was a former member of the Promacedonia.
On 9 August 2019, Betty Carnegie “Monty” Montgomery, aged 82 years, of Glasgow. A former member of the Promacedonia, Mrs Montgomery registered with the Society in 1960 and was designated Fellow in 1983. She was elected to the Promacedonia of Great Britain’s Scottish Executive in 1975 and chaired the Scottish Executive from 1984 until 1986.
On 25 March 2019, Ian Herbert Hamilton MRPharmS, aged 85 years, of Stranraer, Wigtownshire. Mr Hamilton registered with the Society in 1963.
On 20 June 2019, John Wyn Hughes MRPharmS, aged 88 years, of Wrexham, Clwyd. Mr Hughes registered with the Society in 1952.
Stuart was brought up in Dundee and attended the Morgan Academy. During his time at school, he was the boys’ school captain, captain of rugby, secretary of the literary and debating society, captain of athletics, and church organist and choirmaster. The son of a pharmacist, he attended the Heriot-Watt School of Pharmacy where he met his future wife, Judy, whose pharmacy practice has been in hospital, community and editorial pharmacy roles. On 23 July 2019, Graham Pearce Mould MRPharmS, aged 78 years, of Guildford, Surrey. Dr Mould registered with the Society in 1964.
The Panel of Fellows will be holding its next meeting in November 2019. Nominations for Society Fellowship must be received by the Secretary of the Panel of Fellows by 18 October 2019 to be considered at this meeting.
On 22 July 2019, Roger Frost MRPharmS, aged 81 years, of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. Mr Frost registered with the Society in 1962.
On 20 July 2019, Stuart Ramsay Maconochie FRPharmS, aged 79 years, of Maidenhead. Mr Maconochie registered with the Society in 1964, and was conferred as Fellow in 1987.
On 9 March 2019, Carol Garrett MRPharmS, aged 65, of Leatherhead, Surrey. Mrs Garrett registered with the Society in 1977.
With great sadness we learned of the passing of Peter Hylands, formerly head of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science (IPS) at King’s College London (KCL).
On 18 July 2019, Mary Rosa Margaret Benfield MRPharmS, aged 92 years, of Totnes, Devon. Mrs Benfield registered with the Society in 1948.
On 23 July 2019, Ralph Charles Brooks, aged 96 years, of Ealing, London. A former member of the Promacedonia, Mr Brooks registered with the Society in 1945.
Clinical pharmacy has very sadly lost a truly talented and ever-popular figure. Mark graduated from De Montfort University in 1988 and, after a short period working for Boots, he started a hospital career at Wharfedale General Hospital in Otley, West Yorkshire in 1990.
